Tenuta del Portale, located in the heart of the production area of the Aglianico del Vulture, was born in 1990 thanks to the passion of the D’Angelo family whose commitment has always been to capture the character of the grapes and the zone superbly in the bottle. The peculiar pedoclimatic conditions of this area (a soil of volcanic origin) the position of the vineyards, the harsh winters and the warm summers, with a considerable temperature range between day and night, are the reasons for the body, the complexity, the strength and the remarkable intensity of the scent of this wine.
100% aglianico grapes grown in volcanic soils in the Basilicata region produce wines of extraordinary intensity in both aroma and flavour, with the top notes being of sweet red and black cherries, tar and spice. This wine is matured for a minimum of 18 months in large Slovanian oak barrels and then matured in bottle for a further 6 months before being released. It is seriously well structured and can easily cellar for 10 years.
The winery sits amongst Wine Specatator's top 100 Italian producers and is the only such recognised producer from Basilicata.
