AG 91-93 This is top class Barolo from a blue ribbon producer. Cannubi is to Barolo what Pauillac is to Cabernet, Cornas to Syrah, Mesnil to Champagne. If you have been wondering what everyone is gushing about when it comes to Barolo, set aside an hour to decant this beauty and sit back and savour some true magic in a glass. This is a baby now yet approachable. Will continue to develop and improve for 20 years.

Gold San Francisco IWC 2014. Tasting note: A firm, chewy red with blackberry, blueberry and cherry character. Full body, velvety tannins and a delicately fruity finish. A little tight right now. Let it open with a year or two more of bottle age. (15-Sep-2014) James Suckling 90 points.

WA 92+ The 2005 Barolo is terrific. This is one of the darkest, richest and most intense young Baroli I have ever tasted from Borgogno. Dark cherries, smoke, licorice and tobacco are some of the nuances that emerge from this muscular, powerful Barolo. Despite the wine’s massive fruit, it remains a firm, classically built wine with chewy, dusty tannins that needs many years in bottle to come together. Still, it is impressive at this stage. Anticipated maturity: 2020-2040. AG Dec 2010. Borgogno is one of the blue ribbon producers of barolo, having been established in 1761. The history of Italy and Borgogno are intertwined. JS 92 Borgogno is one of the blue ribbon producers of barolo, having been established in 1761. The history of Italy and Borgogno are intertwined. Indeed, the wines of Borgogno were served at the official function to celebrate the union of Italy under Garibaldi. The winery has always prided itself on its library stock, which we were fortunate enough to be invited to taste on our last trip. After shamelessly begging, they succumbed to our pathetic pleas and agreed to give us a small allocation of their precious aged stock. What was even more surprising was the reasonableness of the pricing, especially compared to lesser but more popular...

WA 93 The 2008 Barolo offers a pretty succession of savory notes that span from bresaola and cigar box to dried fruit and prune. Despite the apparent, and beautiful, evolution of tertiary aromas on display, the wine continues to ooze with life and vitality. The silky, fine nature of the tannin is especially enjoyable. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. ML June 2013.

JS 94, AG 93, Tanzer 92, WA 91 The Liste cru (in the Barolo township) is known to make complex and age-worthy wines. In fact, the 2008 Barolo Liste is almost too much of a good thing with almost-overwhelming intensity and immediate tones of tar, cured meat, licorice, pressed rose, prune and black currents that rise quickly from the glass. This wine does not tread lightly. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028. ML June 2013.

WA 93 The opaque plum-colored 1997 Barolo La Rosa reveals the influence of toasty new oak in its fabulously pure, concentrated nose, which represents the essence of melted licorice, blackberries, and assorted black fruits. As the wine sits in the glass, scents of toast, smoke, leather, tar, and fennel emerge. Full-bodied, massively concentrated, powerful, and dense, it requires 3-5 years of cellaring. WA 91 The 1999 Barolo La Rosa is from one of the home vineyards around the winery in Serralunga d’Alba. Sweet and smoky on the nose with supplementary scents of sweet licorice, saddle leather, and kirsch, it is a warm, mouthfilling example of Serralunga Barolo, sizeable and intense, but balanced and round as well. The power is kept well in check by the sweetness of the fruit and the polish of the tannins. Already a fine glass of Barolo, I would opt for drinking this wine between 2006 and 2020. Oct 2003.
