WA 93 The Bordeaux varietals begin with the 2005 Merlot Brookman Vineyard. Sourced from a 65-year-old vineyard, it is opaque purple-colored with an expressive perfume of toasty oak, mulberry, blackberry, black raspberry, and chocolate. Layered, rich, and thick, it can be drunk now but will evolve for 5-7 years. JM Oct 2007.
WA 92 The 2006 Bordeaux varietals begin with the 2006 Merlot Brookman Vineyard. Velvety textured and approachable now, it will nevertheless evolve for 5-7 years and drink well through 2020. JM Feb 2009.
WA 92 The wines made from Bordeaux varietals begin with the 2007 Merlot Brookman which spent 18 months in 85% new French oak. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it exhibits a superb nose of toast, pencil lead, spice box, black currant, and blackberry. This leads to a medium to full-bodied wine with a supple texture, excellent grip, and complex, savory flavors. This lengthy effort will round out with an additional 3-4 years of cellaring. JM Oct 2009.
WA 91 2008 Brookman Vineyard Merlot presents a deep garnet-purple color and moderately pronounced notes of macerated plums, blackberries, cloves, pencil shavings and a whiff of stewed tea. With a structure of medium-high acid and a medium-firm level of chewy tannins, it’s well balanced with the condensed full-bodied fruit, finish long. Delicious now, it should keep to 2014+. LPB Dec 2010.
Bright scarlet colour. Blueberry and briar fruit to the bouquet, plums and dark chocolate over sweet cocoa tar notes, cardamon and mulberries. Cocoa and sour cherries on the medium weight palate, framed by light oak and supported by supple fruit tannins. Ripe, lingering fruit flavours, excellent mouthfeel and a delicious, plum lined finish.
WA 89-91. The red wines include the outstanding 2004 Merlot Prestige, which was bottled after spending 24 months in 100% new French oak. There is plenty of bad Merlot in the marketplace, but consumers should remember that when it’s great, it’s very great (i.e., Bordeaux’s Petrus). Haan’s 2004 exhibits a dense purple color along with a sumptuous perfume of plums, coffee, mocha, chocolate, and berries. Full-bodied with well-integrated oak and plenty of length, it will drink well for a decade. RPJ Oct 2006.

JH 94 Tasting note:Very typical of the Grand Merlot style, with barrel ferment fusing the French Allier oak into the wine, yet not obscuring the varietal statement of the fruit, and helping the super-fine tannins. (16-Dec-2008)
