As the 2009 vintages are heralded by France as yet another "magnificent" vintage, it is interesting to look back on the past few vintages and realise that without doubt the 2005 vintage is turning out to be the most important, with dependable quality almost right across the board. We believe that to date the 2005 is the best of the century (well until next vintage at least.) We have chosen a limited range of 2005 Bordeaux which we believe constitutes great value and at the same time brilliant quality.
The stock is available in 12 bottle OWC cases, but we are prepared to break them up if you purchase a minimum of 3 bottles of a certain label. The notes for each wine are Wine Advocate Notes. As much as one may reject wine critiques of late, some of these notes are very persuasive...
Clos du Marquis 2005 - RPJ 91 - $110
(Second wine of Leoville Las Cases)
The superb second wine, the 2005 Clos du Marquis, reflects the utter brilliance of the 2005 grand vin. It boasts an inky/ruby/purple colour along with a sweet perfume of lead pencil, ripe cherries and black currants, and hints of earth and vanillin. Dense, chewy, fleshy, and full-bodied, this beauty will be drinkable in 3-4 years, and should keep for 15-20.
Bahans de Haut Brion 2005 - RPJ 89 - $120
The second wine, the 2005 Bahans-Haut-Brion, is a fruit-forward, deliciously soft, round, stylish offering possessing hints of figs, plums, black currants, cherries, and minerals. Soft, with supple tannin, it is ideal for drinking over the next 12-15 years.
Cos Labour 2005 - RPJ 89+ - $78
One of the finest wines I have tasted from this estate, the 2005 Cos Labory exhibits a deep ruby/purple hue, aromas of road tar, blackberries, crème de cassis, forest floor, smoke, and graphite, medium to full body, and abundant tannin. It is a complete, dense effort with high tannins in the finish. Once the tannins melt away, it should represent an outstanding example of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.
Figeac 2005 - RPJ 90 - $215
The finest Figeac since the 1990 and 1982, the restrained, but complex 2005 exhibits notes of black olives, new saddle leather, tobacco leaf, and sweet cherry and black currant fruit. The wine is medium-bodied with racy tannins as well as a streamlined style built on finesse and delicacy rather than on power and concentration. Consume it over the next 15-20 years.
Lascombes 2005 - RPJ 95 - $148
A gorgeous example of Lascombes, the 2005, a blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, continues the remarkable turn-around in quality that began five years ago. A stunningly opulent wine with a dense purple colour, the 2005 possesses a beautiful perfume of spring flowers, blueberries, blackberries, creosote, and graphite, full body, silky but noticeable tannins, a layered mouthfeel, and a stunning, 45+-second finish. This is a brilliant, modern-styled Margaux that should age for 30-35 years.
Potensac 2005 - RPJ 90 - $65
A superb value for Jean-Hubert Delon, the 2005 Potensac has a deep ruby/purple colour, a classic bouquet of sweet red and black fruits, as well as gorgeous texture and purity. Medium-bodied and concentrated, this wine behaves like a Medoc cru classe. Moreover, it will age very well for 10-15 years. Very impressive!
Poujeaux 2005 - RPJ 89 - $70
This deep ruby/purple-tinged sleeper of the vintage exhibits fresh, lively minerality intermixed with delicate background wood, sweet raspberry fruit, medium to full body, zesty acidity, and ripe tannin. Usually the top wine from Moulis, Poujeaux's 2005 is again a fairly priced, impressive effort. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.
Stock will take 12-24 hours to confirm. It will fly in 7-10 days out of France.
