It is always fun to note pricing disparities between French and Australian Syrah for example, that have enjoyed the same rating level from the same writer. It seems the value always lies with the New World option with very few exceptions. I guess that is what makes the whole ratings debate so interesting, and as my perpetually hung-over, anti-establishment economics lecturer used to say - "bring on chaos and disparity and opportunity always follows".

Truth be told, we all know that ratings are only a guide and nothing beats getting your own feet wet and deciding for yourself - but when a major writer gets all heady about a wine and throws 97 points in the direction of an Australian wine, it's worth having a dabble...when the wine is being offered for $58 - it is just crazy not to take maximum advantage - no matter what the state of your over-filled wine fridge and annoyed spouse...

Shaw & Smith continues to reign as our undisputed top selling Australian Sauvignon Blanc, with their M3 Chardonnay also selling fast whenever we have it available. Sourcing sufficient stock over here for this brand is always a tough one - and after James Halliday annointed the Shiraz late last year, already low production allocations fanished fast.

It has taken a fair bit of camel-trading, arm wrestling and vast promises of eternal devotion to get the meagre ten dozen available today. This sort of low volume - deep value offer would normally only go to Loyalty Club, but as we are in throws of the annual review of membership to the Loyalty Club, we are opening it to the whole database. I apologise in advance if we run out before cocktail hour today. Hopefully a large slice of the database will still be sunning thier buns on  a beach somewhere and won`t be reading this one...

The Offer:

Shaw and Shaw Shiraz 2009 (JH 97)

$58 net

"Deep colour, vibrant hue; deep and compelling levels of ripe black fruits, savoury spices and well handled toasty oak; the palate is unctuous and silky, with black and red fruits combining with silky fine-grained tannins expanding across the palate with true grace and harmony; long and luscious. - James Halliday November 2011"
