I was at a blind trade tasting of Kiwi wines last week for a local establishment in Emerald Hill. It was heavy going as the mandate for submissions was Kiwi whites and reds at $26 and under. I reckon that generally wines at this price point in Singapore ought to come with a health warning and liability waiver from the distributors, and yesterday was no exception to the rule - I wandered home for some shiraz-based therapy afterwards.

I realise that it is tough to be a distributor and murderously competitive here in Singapore. The internet is making things even harder for wine distributors, as consumers are spoilt for choice and consumer access to real pricing of wine is getting easier to do. Gone are the days of a distributor and retailer taking their pound of flesh with broad margins and expecting the consumer just to cough up crazy wine prices for the pleasure of being slowly poisoned by the poor quality wine. The "quality to value" proposition needs to be there or the customer will just buy elsewhere from the 400 other importers in Singapore.

Today`s offer is really no exception. If one was to seek Coldstream Hills wines from traditional chanels, these wines at wholesale, are significantly more expensive than todays prices.

Coldstream Hills has a lot of history attached to it. Not only was it one of the first wineries to focus world attention on the Yarra Valley as a serious producer of red and white Burgundy  - ie. Chardonnay and Pinot noir, it was origionally owned by one of the few lawyers to enter the industry as a winemaker and actually make money from it - James Halliday..probably Australia`s most influential of current wine writers.

The winery suffered badly from the fires in 2009, and I am told they were a whisker away from actually losing the entire property, but the winds changed and they were largely spared. Click on the offer to see the wine tasting notes from Jeremy Oliver.
