One of the few positive aspects of the downturn in Australian wine exports is that more and more wineries are diverting their premium and very high quality juice into their secondary and more easilly marketable labels - giving us as consumers a veritable treasure trove full of options for a lot less than what we have been expected to pay in the past.
We have also been seeing clients buying 94-96 pointer aged red wines through our Loyalty Section at not a lot more than $60 a bottle and that trend also is going to be with us for a while.
When it comes to preferred blended whites - wines such as Pierro SSB and Vasse Felix Classic Dry White etc are firm favourites amongst the database. It seems that the combination of the crisp minerally acid structure of the Margaret River Sauv Blanc blended against the buttery citrus of good Semillon appeals widely.
Cullen Winery have just scored a home run with their version of this style with their rating of 96 points from James Halliday. The wine has always been a good bankable style but never before has it been acknowledged quite as profoundly as this.
It was picked over a long 3 week period to maximise flavour and body. With 70% of the blend matured in oak to give it more depth and structure, the complex flavour coming off the fruit was so intense that it had to be left on oak for an additional month to restrain it and give it the right balance.
This is a definite contender to my house`s every day wine shelf with the prospect of the wine becoming even more rewarding after 6 months or so. Just goes to prove that you never have to set foot inside a supermarket wine shop ever again with prices and quality like this...
