As the internet continues to popularise wine opinion and bring out into the open massive numbers of amateur ratings via sites like www.cellartracker.com , there are some amazing rating spreads developing  between what a pro writing for the Wine Advocate in the USA may think about a bottle of pinot vs. what Joe Bloggs in Serangoon Gardens thinks about the same wine.

Sure - whilst most people with the exception of Joe`s mum probably don`t think much of him as a wine critic, when one goes online and reads 200 comments by similar Joe`s from all over the world, some very serious consumer trends start to emerge - which from a marketing point of view  are about as difficult to ignore as Angelina Jolie in black spandex.

One of the more traditional ratings platforms which still hold major importance for wine makers are the international wine competitions, as the wines are judged in classes of contemporaries and the winners of these are certainly worth their salt. Obviously not all competitions are as important, but for me nothing beats the importance of the London International Wine Challenge in terms of wine submissions, rigours of the judging process, and history of solid reviews over the years.

Desert Heart Pinot Noir 2007 just picked up a Gold Medal at the 2010 London International Wine Challenge... an important achievement amongst its peers.

With Pinot drinkers, there seem to be two camps of drinkers - those who are looking for Cherry Ripe and strawberry action in their Pinot of choice and the other camp who are into more "Burgundian" - spice, dark fruit and what some politely call "forest floor" aroma`s. I call it "cows poo" and when you find it in a pinot - believe me - it rocks.

This wine showed me both those styles and delivered it well. It is rich in flavour, colour and soul and befitting a far heavier price tag than this one. Jancis Robinson puts it better than I ever could by saying of the wine " This wine should please both the modernists and classicists."

Being a 2007 vintage from the prestigeous Felton Road address, you are getting what is looking like what will be remembered as the vintage of the decade for New Zealand pinot too...
