I have a friend who is a resturant maniac and has just returned from her bi-annual pilgrimage to the high church of food and beverage in the USA - Manhattan island. There is no doubt that when it comes to the States the place to be is New York although I reckon the Brits and Spanish are winning at World Cup level these days.
I was horrified to hear that one of the new bar trends in NY is "carnivorous cocktails" - a.k.a. the use of animal blood in martinis to impart "depth and substance". I realise that at the ripe old age of 45 going on 18, I have to be open to new ideas and trends but enough is enough - bring back the bad old days of a Humphrey Bogart style of dry martini with a slug of reliable Russian vodka and a bottle of Vermouth waved in the general direction of the glass - and the same goes for wine-making styles particularly when it comes to South Australian Shiraz.
JJ Hahn falls into what my drinking mates would call "Old School" style of wine. (Think Rockford, Henschke etc)
The winemaker - Rolf Binder of Veritas fame - makes wine in a way that has been impressing consumers and collectors when RPJ was still in nappies (metaphorically speaking). The vines are seriously old and well positioned on the prime real estate component of the Barossa valley floor itself.
The 1914 Shiraz label only produces around 400 cases a year (you guessed it - the vines were planted in 1914), and needless to say never sees the light of day here in Singapore. The trick with this wine is that it is a single vineyard wine, which means Rolf doesn`t mix and match juice to produce an intended result, he has to use oak in specific ways to produce the best possible wine from that specific year. The result is a wine that is largely very different year-to-year, and has a strong following amongst the wine zealots.
This is what the head zealot had to say about the JJ Hahn 1914 Shiraz 2004:-
"... possesses soft acids, a voluptuous texture, and loads of crème de cassis fruit intermixed with smoky bacon fat, roasted meats, herb and spice box characteristics. With terrific length..."
