Being the kid who spent most of his Fridays staying back in detention for insurgency or nicking somebody`s sandwiches, I have developed a strong distaste for people who say "I told you so", but in this instance it is way too difficult for me to resist being the one to wag the figurative finger ...

Glenelly Lady May Cabernet was a hit with the database this year - with us having to fly stock in three times to fill demand. The awards have started to pour in recently for this wine, so I thought it may be fun to update everybody with recent global acknowledgements for this wine which may very well have started a whole new trend in South African wines.

The vineyards themselves date back to the turn of the 17th centuary, but it was their acquisition in 2003 by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who for over 30 years was owner of the famous Bordeaux Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Pauillac Grand Cru Classé - that things at the Glenelly Estate started to look a whole lot more interesting...

People say sometimes that South Africa is the Old World of the New World. I know a lot of South Africans who would rupture something if they heard this, but truth be told, one whiff of this wine is usually all it takes for people to fall in love with its delicate array of spice, raspberry and blackcurrant. As the wine ages it has started to show a certain sophisticated swagger and richness that dictates rather than suggests -  echoes of top drawer Bordellaise style and presence.

The writer who encapsulated it the best was Wine Advocate`s Neal Martin who writes that with the appointment as winemaker of Luke O`Cuinneagain, who worked at Angelus, Screaming Eagle and Rustenberg, Lady May-Eliane will surely give her old "Deuxieme Cru" a run for its money (and thats before you even think about the price difference)...
