Iam told of many doctors, hedge fund managers and lawyers who have made a million dollars in a winery by starting with 2 million and losing it. The myth of pottering around some vines in the Tuscan sun like some sort of well tailored viticultural pensioner out of a Henry James novel, is a widely subscribed and costly fantasy - it is sheer hard work by all accounts, with clearly not enough time in the day to enjoy the fruits of one`s labours.
That said, every now and again I get to spend time with somebody who lives, breathes and revels in the joy of winemaking - as was the case last week with Majella`s Brian Lynn. His enthusiasim and sheer love for his wines is infectious - and that enthusiasm is shared by most of the wine gurus of the world, as well as a vast number of our clients.
Being in Connawarra - he is"all about Cabernet" and I am really glad about that. The only problem as a humble minimal margin discounter (and yes I have been called a whole lot worse), these wines are just too damm cheap. I have been nagging Brian for years to make a select super premium Cabernet like so many of his Coonawarra neighbours, but he is a wiser man than I - choosing instead to offer brilliant Cabernet to as broad a market as possible.
The great part about this particular newsletter is that instead of using my jaded and possibly stylistically biaised palette, I am able to recommend wines in order of popularity from the lineup - as voted by the case loads of purchases made on the night.
