Ask anybody about South Africa and its wines, and they usually glaze over and start making gentle cooing noises about the times they were lost somewhere in the foothills of Stellenbosch or along the soft sandy beaches of the Cape with a smoky Pinotage in one hand and an even smokier beach bunny in the other.

The reality of life is far different from the high resolution glossy picture we get as tourists in a maximum-security bubble, but the beauty and pleasure of the South African experience profoundly affects all who spend time there, as do the wines.

I have often smiled at the fact that Meerlust Rubicon has never received the hallowed five star rating from John Platter (South Africa`s major wine guru). In some ways that is not a bad thing as it may have slowed down the inexorable increases in price that the super-achiever wines from South Africa are experiencing on the world markets.

Rubicon is classically built to last - with solid but achinging elegant lines - made from lovingly tended Cabernet, Merlot and Franc. Its primary style echoes the blends of Bordeaux, but is unmistakeably African and uniquely brilliant. We have sold the last five vintages of this wine and I can say without any hesitation that this vintage re-writes the rule books for Rubicon and the Five Star Award it has finally acheived from Platter is more than well deserved - its high bloody time....

The Offer:

Meerlust Rubicon 2007 (750ml)
(Drinking well now and for another decade at least. I am confident that this 2007 is the best vintage I have ever seen at this early stage. Video note on right hand side. There is a deep rich darkness to the fruit that is both exciting and compelling - a "must have" for any lover of classic SA Cabernets.)

$60 net ....

Delivery available now for first 20 dozen.
