Ask any child star who within a few short Oscar seasons after hitting puberty, ends up living back with their mothers and holding a Loyalty Card to Betty Ford Clinic - its hard to change the way people think about you once they have made up their minds.
Rose suffers a similar fate and is viewed by many as the Lindsay Lohan of the wine scene - always contentious with many not sure if admitting a fondness will impress their mates terribly much. Blokes are especially biased - who even in todays world of pink being the new black, still seem to think they may lose their Alpha Male rating for some reason by ordering it after the rugby match instead of beer...
Truth be told, it is an awesome style of wine particularly for this climate. For red wine drinkers, this is a definite option if sitting outside or having an excuse to drink before lunch - as some certainly misguided person who certainly has not read enough Hemingway once told me it was considered "unruly" to begin drinking before noon.
Derived from the "first run" pressing of grapes, with a gentle bleeding of color from the skins, the trend is catching on with a recent report out of the UK showing that Rose consumption is the fastest growing wine category for the past five years. Production of Pinot Rose in New Zealand is always very small, with todays wineries producing less than a couple of hundred cases per year each.

Desert Heart Pinot Rose 2010
My favorite of the Kiwi Rose lineup this season. This is a delicate, fragrant and poised pot pouri style of dried and fresh cherries, lavender and lilac. A baseline of classic Bannockburn Pinot from Denny provides the framework for an easy drinking style that does not need the excuse of a meal to be opened.
Drumsara Pinot Rose 2011
A rich, medium to full bodied Rose - jam packed with strawberries and rubarb creme brule. Floral and fragrant with a suprisingly plump mouthfeel that lingers.
Rockburn Stolen Kiss Rose 2011
Take a bite of toffee apple and think of kissing Marilyn Monroe just after she freshened herself up with Cherry flavored lip gloss - and you are about half-way there. I try to avoid calling wines sexy, but this wine really is kind of racy and ready to party. Custard and strawberries prevail afterwards with a little bit of sweetness.
Turkey Flat Rose 2010
One of my all time - left on a dessert island choices. You cannot fail to be in a good mood after a glass of this. The color of lightly smoked salmon - it has dominant flavors of raspberry, watermelon and cherry ripe and sings to you long after the sun goes down. A blend of Grenache, Cabernet, Shiraz and Dolcetto, this wine effortlessly wins accolades vintage after vintage, and is worth every point of its 95 point rating from Halliday...
