The Old World v.s. New World debate will no doubt rage on for as long as grapes are turned into wine, and it takes quite savage turns from people who are often firmly entrenched in one or the other camp.
I tend to take the John Lennon approach and love all wines equally but my heart does lie with the Antipodeans at the end of the day. I am often asked what my "favourite wine of all time is". I fear it changes constantly, but if I was on my last breath - in no doubt what will be some maximum security twighlight home for the unmanagebale, the last drip I would like to have given to me would definitely need to be 100 percent proof Grange 1971.
Selling sparkling red (a quintessentially Aussie concept) is a tough one concept - even when talking to Australians. It is discarded by most as a drink to endure in the 45 degree heat of a turkey dinner at noon on Christmas Day. The nasty ones are carbonated fruit concoctions and worthy of disdain, but when they are good....they change the way you look at chilled wines for ever.
Primo Estate is in the McLaren Vale and well worth a visit if you are around that neck of the woods. Their Joseph Sparkling Shiraz is a blend of over 40 different vintages and combined with their ultra-premium Primo Moda Cabernet Merlot from 1991 vintages onwards.
I was lucky enough to have one just this week with some mates and it had been cellared for some time and was still looking fantastic. I would even eat gradma`s "tough-as-bootstraps" Christmas turkey for an excuse to drink this gem - it rocks.
This what the gurus have to say about it:
'JOSEPH Sparkling Red both defines and defies its genre: an iconic Australian unlike any of its peers. It confidently stands shoulder to shoulder with the world's classics, and therefore proudly holds top rank in my wine canon'. - Richard Hemming, jancisrobinson.com
