As an immigrant myself, I have to empathise with the feelings of any new arrival on foreign shores, but when the King family first arrived in New Zealand, they picked Invercargil, the most southern of all cities in New Zealand to disembark - where it is so bleakly cold and wet that if it were me, I would have just turned right around and gone back to the joys of a depressed 20th century UK instead.
It says something for their true grit and commitment to the notion of "go forth and multiply", that they stayed and florished as abundently as they did, with the third generation and their 11 children (only one son as can be seen from the pictures above) moving to the far warmer climes of Marlborough on the tip of the South island to plant some vines.
The obvious thing about Marlborough is of course that the region is very good at making Sauvignon Blanc. The sharper side of that particular two-edged sword is that there is a lot of space and plenty of great wine flowing from it. It just isnt enough to make good juice - you have to be able to make it cost effectively, have a dedicated distribution mechansim and just as importantly - be a point of difference in a very tough field.
The check list for me when evaluating Sauv Blanc, is good acid, fresh lively fruit and a nose that doesnt give me the feeling that I am sitting in the middle of a used kitty litter munching on raw green capsicum. After that it comes down to factors like balance and finish. If the wine can do these things, then its in the running for a second look.
The valiant efforts of the single vineyard Ten Sisters label sailed through the initial rigors of our most recent Sauvignon Blanc lineup - where it prevailed amongst a field of a dozen others. It gave a high octane zesty boost of life - with juicy globs of ripe tropical fruit, as well as a unique top note of soft gently perfumed talc - all wrapped in a crisply defined acid profile that makes any day worth getting through just for the chance to get a crack at another bottle...
The Offer
Ten Sisters Sauvignon Blanc 2010
$30
(This wine doesnt sell much anywhere except for the east coast of the USA - where one or two of the sisters have found themselves, and are no doubt continuing the family tradition. We have it here in Singapore for the first time and exclusively to our database. We have ten dozen only today but will be shipping more this month.)
