There are plenty of cool places to stay in the Cape, but one of the best options for the world weary traveller is a tiny old fishing village called Hermanus. It sits on the edge of a piece of coastline outside of Cape Town called Walker Bay where each year, a vast pod of whales come back to mate and you are surrounded by some of the best wineries in the world. It surely has to be the perfect spot to sit, have a glass of wine and become part of the rythmn of Africa.

Times have changed since it was a humble fishing vllage and the cottages are now very beautifully restored renditions of a time gone by. By some miracle of local governance, developers are prevented from building more than one floor high and have to be thatched in the same tradition as the origional cottages of the 1700`s, when the village was formed. As a result the community remains frozen in time, but filled to the brim with artists, resturanteurs, winemakers and sundry colorful citizens of the world  - all wearing shorts and enjoying a slower, simpler life.

Bordering the village is Hamilton Russell winery - formed in 1975 by Tim Hamilton Russel. Tim ran one of Africa`s leading advertising agencies and like many others before him, saw the light and decided to cash in and spend it on wine. Over the past few decades he has built a world-renowned brand, listed on more Michelin encrusted wine lists around the world than any other known SA brand.  He specialises in producing Chardonnay and Pinot only and is broadly acknowledged as a producer of classy, individualistic wines of power and grace.

In later developments that not even Wilbur Smith could have written better, the next generation (Anthony) got sent to Wharton Busines College by way of Eton and returned to join the business - and the secondary label Southern Right was born with enormous success in its own right.

Today we are offering the Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc, as well as some late museum releases of the Hamilton Russell Cardonnay and Pinot. I have put stars next to the outstanding vintages.

The Offer:

Hamilton Russell Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc 2010
$32 net

A fresh, flinty and racy version of the style - paying hommage more to Sancerre than Marlborough. Serve freezing cold and with any kind of seafood.
~

Hamilton Russell Southern Right Pinotage
$39 net

2007 (Limited)
2009

Dark and brooding, these wines are kind of mystical in form, and very contentious as a varietal. Like opera - either you love it or hate it. Think of Shiraz crossed with Chilean Carmenere and then you are getting close.

Hamilton Russell Chardonnay
$49 net

2007 (Limited)
2008 (Limited)
2009 (Limited)
2010

The various vintages are different in style, but at this stage of their lives, my pick would be the 2007 - definite echoes of Puligny Montrachet here, but distinctly South African too. Rich and buttery flavor profile but contained within a tight framework of good acid and great oak. Balance is good and with potential for mahy more years of cellaring.

~

Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir
$55 net

2007 (Limited)
2008 (Limited) (Decanter Gold)
2009

Forget about gentle whispers of blackberry and cedar, these wines are full bodied, smoky renditions of funky tobacco and liquorice. Excellant oak once more with long term potential. I prefer the gentler version of the 2008 to the 2007.
