If Sauvignon Blanc was a piece of software that everybody needed to make their worlds go around, New Zealand would be Microsoft. Who knows how long the dominance will last, but it is always good to support the competition...
Whenever I want to torment my Australian mates (which is usually when they lose the cricket - so it is not as frequently as I would like), I mention the fact that they drink more Kiwi SB than the Kiwis themselves. Australia is awash with the stuff and finding serious competition domestically is a task.
Two Hands Chief Winemaker - Mat Wenk has been making his own stuff for a couple of vintages now, and predictably it has been growing in favour. We have had some good success with his Zinfandel from Langhorne Creek ($45), and a look at his SB is well worth the effort.
The wine got same rating from Wine Advocate as the Dog Point and Shaw & Smith Sauv Blancs.
Hailing from Adelaide Hills, it is a step away from the fruit salad pavlovas of a lot of the Southern Australian Sauv Blancs. It is fair to say that it imparts more "minerality" (if there is such a word) and citrus, than tropical fruit and capsicum. As much as I am loathe to sound like a wine wallie, I am left with a sense of the ozone filled freshness of the beach on one of those unbelievably blue summer days that only Australia can produce - it works for me.
