There I was minding my own business last week in a packed elevator - holding two cases of impossibly heavy wine cases, whilst trying to take up less space and avoid dripping sweat into the egg salad sandwich of the lady standing next to me - when I heard out of the depths of the elevator, in an accent which would put Crocodile Dundee to shame:
" XXXX `ing hell, with this XXXX `ing World Cup going on, we are XXXX`ed with no XXXX`ing brokers for the next XXXX`ing 3 weeks..!"
That was it for me, the egg salad and the wines - and we hit ground level in a rioutous shambles - proving the wise old saying that you can take the Aussie out of Australia but not the Australian out of the Aussie....
I am hit with a ton of email flyers daily at the moment proclaiming World Cup "Fever" like it is a marketers passport to shove as much random wine down the throats of football fans as possible. I am convinced that I am going to be offered a Ghanian Chenin Blanc any minute, when it seems to me that it is mostly all about Heineken for the fans - judging by the events I have attended so far.
Be that as it may, I can`t avoid showing a wine which needs no cellaring, fuss or flutter, and can be drunk with ease at 3.30 in the morning as we all assure ourselves that we will be just fine for work that day after a few Berocca`s and a dose of eye drops:-
Viking Grand Shiraz is a brand well known to the database as we have shown it before - as and when the cost and currency has allowed for fair value. It hit its heights of fame with the 1998 vintage and has produced consistantly true-to- form Barossa style shiraz ever since. Initially set aside as contract grown grapes for Penfolds Grange, the owners went it alone in the mid ninties and I am glad they did.
This is the second offering of `03 Shiraz recently (Struie `03 was the other one and a sell-out). After downing it at the local Hawker Centre last Sunday night with Chili Crab, Laksa and the worlds best fried rice - I reckon I can say with confidence that it will taste great with just about any kind of World Cup food that you throw in it`s direction.
For me it has all the rich muscular power of classic Barossa fruit - whilst having been mellowed to impressive finesse after 7 years in the bottle. It also has a length that lasts long after the you put the glass down, switch the TV off and tip-toe back into bed praying that the Winistry of War and Order has slept through the proceedings without being woken up.
