"...Why Pay Retail...?"

I have to be honest about it - I do a mental knee jerk whenever anybody mentions "Robert Parker" and "Australian Shiraz" in the same sentance these days. The reality is that a large slice of the global wine community (inlcuding a lot of gurus who should know better) have "done a 180" and now seem to have blanket opinion that if a Shiraz comes from Australia it is uncool. If it has high alcohol and big rich fruit it is doubly undercool - and then if RPJ actually likes it and rates it highly - the stuff is worthy of immediate suspicion and derision...
Often there is substance to the fallacy, but there are some serious exceptions to this rule such as Jim Barry Armagh - RPJ loves it and I defy anybody to tell me that that wine is questionable in style - every bottle should come with its own little prayer rug in my view.
Having said that, when I was given a bottle of the Warrenmeng Black Puma Shiraz 2001 and told "Parker rated this 96 points for the 1997 vintage and a wine investment company sold me this for capital gain", I sat down and wiped my brow. After doing a little digging it seemed that despite the fact that 2001 was a lot better as a vintage in Australia, the wine did not feature with RPJ. Halliday kind of liked it with a 93, but in todays world of wine ratings inflation, that is ok, but nothing worth getting all misty eyed about.
After looking at it yesterday - it seemed clear that - yes there is a lot of ripe fruit, but the effects of the cool high altitude climate of the Pyrenees - home of Dalwhinnie "The Eagle" and others, this wine is bursting with soft rich fruit, but contained in a firm structure of easy and elegant tannins. The has aged well and is ready to be opened.
Decant it to let it catch its breath and dont tell your mates that Parker has ever gone near it - and all will be right in the land...
