While "working" recently with mates at a Brown Bag Night featuring Coonawarra Cabernet, we were all fairly flush from various Cabernets (about 16 different wines at the end of the day, before my palette declared an unfair labour dispute and started crying out for a Cohiba), when someone sneaked open a bottle of Zema Estate Cabernet 2005...

The trick with Zema Cab is always to give it a little time to find its feet, as the tannins can be hard work at an early stage, despite wonderful rich fruit from cradle to grave. (Unlike Majella Cabernet from the same region - which pretty much jumps out of the glass and demands immediate consumption).

A friend of mine leaned across to me and declared "This Cabernet is so good, it’s enough to make a Shiraz Girl like me jump the fence!". Rare praise indeed for a girl born and bred on nothing but South Australian shiraz.

I lunged for what was left of the rapidly depleting bottle and took a look - she was bang on. Whilst the wine was showing big tannins the last time I had seen it a year or so ago, it had softened and opened up magnificently.

The all-crucial maturation process was in full swing and the fusion between deep rich fruit and oak was as integrated as white on rice, with the tannins still present, but now part of a larger and far more impressive picture.

This wine is good - right now.

My problem with offering a wine of this quality as easy on the wallet as this, is that it is going to take a lot more "work" on both sides of the fence to find another proposition as good for next week`s offer... but that`s next week`s problem...

The Offer: Zema Cabernet 2005 (750ml)

The Price: $39 Net.

Cellaring Notes:  Good now and for another five years, but I dare you to wait that long after opening the first bottle. We only have ten dozen of this and I am betting that the 2006 is definitely not as sexy right now and may never be.
