Wynns lays claim to having some of the oldest vines in Coonawarra, with the Black Label having launched it`s first vintage back in 1954. I have been lucky enough to taste a 1956 vintage and although it`s time had clearly past, the basic framework and body of the wine was still evident and this was exciting and encouraging to see.

The problem of Australian wines not making the long term cellaring promises of their creators and critics is something to be aware of when buying wines. Being in the business of trading, and using quality control as the excuse to open everything we are shown before selling them, we are seeing a lot of well cellared wines - some of which, while still being expensive and well rated, just not making the grade in terms of ageing, balance and maturation. Life is just way too short to drink bad wine...

A global distributor has a backlog of the 2006 Black Label to sell and has discounted it to move. We have had enormous success with the more recent 2007 earlier this year, and so to be able to offer this perfectly aged vintage of the same wine at the same price, is something of an early Christmas gift.

A mate of mine always says that to use words like, "dark, ripe fruit" and "cigar box aromas" are lazy words when describing a wine, and he is right - but in this instance, I have a hard time not using exactly those words to describe this wine. It`s nose is all about Coonawarra cabernet and so is the palate. The wine has all the muscle and finesse of a wine which is destined for greatness without all the fuss and bother attributed to wines at a far higher price.

Halliday rates this wine 95 points and recommends cellaring to 2016 - I am with him on this one through and through.
