Varney Wines GSM 2019 (JH 96)

Three varieties very well suited to McLaren Vale. Bush Vine Grenache provides aromatic lift and bright red fruit characters. Shiraz lends powdery tannin, spice and mid-palate weight, while Mourvèdre rounds out the blend and contributes balance and structure. This wine is a fun and challenging puzzle to assemble each vintage and will age gracefully up to a decade after release.

45% Grenache, 30% Shiraz, 25% Mourvèdre

285 dozen made

14.0% Alc/Vol.

“45/30/25% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre. Seldom do GSMs in this country resemble their prototypes in the southern Rhône. Perhaps it is not the point. But I far prefer when they do – and in this instance, with flare. Best in the land? Very possibly. Suave, taut, streamlined, savoury. Wonderfully pliant and spicy, with a seasoning (15%) of whole bunches. Mourvèdre’s hung game, to kick off. Clove, anise, pepper, blue and black fruits, cardamon and violet, otherwise. Measured, compact and dense. Perfectly extracted. Each tannin a finely wrought rivet, serving to weld a superb wine of precision and latent force.”
