Arriving End of June WA 91. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is surprisingly subdued on first nose and a little unsteady on its feet at this young stage. Give it time and the wine gracefully brings out a long chorus line of aromas that hit the high notes and well and the low ones in slow increments. The bouquet is redolent of small forest berry, white ash, smoke, licorice, balsam herb and delicate spice. It's important to underline the extremely elegant and feminine personality of this wine. This Brunello has no place to go but up in terms of its complexity and evolution. Put it aside for at least five more years before popping the cork. ML...
Arriving End of June WA 94. The 2009 Flaccianello della Pieve is a huge wine that definitely shows the richness of the year, yet somehow retains fabulous balance. Ripe black cherries, mocha, spices and licorice are some of the many notes that flesh out in the glass. The 2009 Flaccianello is impressive, but readers will have to be exceptionally patient. As good as the 2009 is, it doesn’t have the sexiness of the 2004 or 2007, nor the power of vintages like 2006 or 2008. Instead, it is a bit of an in-between wine with elements of all those years. Today it is the wine’s structure and concentration that dominates. My most recent tasting...
Arriving End of June WA 95. The 2011 Flaccianello della Pieve is 100% Sangiovese aged 24 months in new French oak and two months in large oak cask. I’m not sure how Fontodi does it, but this edition of Flaccianello is simply beautiful. It is a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle and red rose that flow harmoniously into unison. In the mouth, the wine shows great opulence and textural richness that is pushed forward by the stylistic softness of the tannins and the wine’s inner freshness. Pretty menthol tones appear on the finish. Drink: 2015-2030. ML Aug 2014.
Arriving End of June Vinous, September 2015 One of the highlights of the vintage, the 2012 Percarlo boasts striking depth and nuance. All of the richness and intensity of the vintage is present, but there is a crystalline purity to the 2012 that is impossible to miss. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, mint and brisk saline notes wrap around the striking, deeply expressive finish. The 2012 is perhaps not as explosive or concentrated as Percarlo can be, but instead there is an element of translucence in the fruit that is incredibly inviting. My impression is that the 2012 will develop along the lines of some of the more finessed Percarlos in...
