Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2018 – 94 Points
Bob Campbell | The Real Review
Aromatic pinot noir with an appealing mix of cherry, plum, mint, dried herbs, and spicy and stemmy flavours. A supple, attractive wine that’s perhaps not as concentrated as its distinguished stable mate, but represents excellent value at this price. A wine of character and class. September 2019.
Looking more and more like a junior Ata Rangi as those 'young' vines grow up to more than 20 years old and each new vintage is released. It's succulent, briary and charry with chewiness from excellent skin tannins and just enough (old) oak. '... a bit of grunt in there' says winemaker Clive Paton.
Crimson is our selection of fruit from younger parcels of vines from our various vineyards on the Martinborough Terrace. In their youth, vines tend to be more fruit expressive, gaining more complexity with time. Now, Crimson is developing more depth of flavour, with a mix of vines aged from 6 to 21 years.
The winemaking philosophy is the same as for our signature Pinot Noir: no enzymes or yeasts are added, providing a hands-off, traditional approach which we feel more truly expresses the site. ATA RANGI
