"Creeping back up to the quality of 2016, before the tricky '17 and '18 vintages, this release of relatively small batch Sauvignon is a charming, fruity little number. Peach and pineapple are backed by slightly reductive, white spice notes. It's the play between freshness and texture on the palate that reels you in. Slightly creamy in the mouth, it slithers over the tongue before being lifted to freshness by bright acidity."
Ten Sisters Sauvignon Blanc has a delightfully fragrant and complex bouquet with underlying citrus aromas. Single-vineyard sourcing allows the terroir its full expression and elicits a purity of flavors. The palate is bright and elegant with refined acidity and ripe flavors. It has good concentration and length, excellent structure, and a well-balanced finish. The sauvignon blanc is given extended lees contact — more than the majority of Marlborough sauvignon blancs — to create complexity and to bring out fruit flavors. Excellent on its own or with seafood, chicken, pork, salads, and Asian food. No sugar added.
The Ten Sisters and their brother are fourth-generation New Zealanders and their ancestors were among the first settlers of the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand.
Their parents, Robert and Mary King, were both born in Invercargill, the southernmost city in the country. After Robert returned from World War II, he bought 750 acres of wild, uncultivated land and, over many years, created a beautiful farm.
He and Mary would eventually have 11 children, only one a son. As adults, the 11 children often traveled around the world with their parents, sharing and developing their great love of food and wine. Later in life, they moved to the sunniest part of New Zealand, Marlborough, and planted a vineyard on their land, fulfilling a longtime dream of Mary’s.
Ellie Bartow, daughter of one of the Ten Sisters, and her husband Dennis now manage the family’s wine business.
