Kay Brothers Hillside Shiraz 2017 (JH 95)

James Halliday 95 points.
Hillside allows Kays to blend Block 11 (on the exposed tip of the hill with shallow sandy loam over limestone and sandstone, wind and sun keeping the yield low) with the higher yielding New Block 6 (dark chocolate loam and clay), matured in American and French oak for 20 months. An exceptional Kay Brothers wine that has elegance to burn.
Drink by: 2037.

The Hillside vineyard was established in 1992 using cuttings from the century old Block 6. A classic example of full bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz. Unlike Block 6, the Hillside Shiraz allows Kay Brothers to pick various parcels of fruit so as to assemble the best blend possible.

Deep ruby
Alluring notes of smoky chacuterie, mocha, blackberry and dried herbs followed by a hint of cedar.
The palate is dense and concentrated. Lashings of rich dark berry fruits, marzipan and underlying earthiness. Followed by fine chocolate like tannins on the finish. A full flavoured wine with plenty of class.
