Lovely expression of grenache. It has meat on its bones yet it remains delicate; everything here feels as though it's been etched into place. It tastes of red licorice and asphalt, twiggy spices and cedar, and at all times it's the Barossa and grenache doing the talking, oak in a supporting role only. VITICULTURE Sourced from a 1-hectare vineyard at Fijndraai in Stellenbosch on heavily de-composed granite soils and just 4 km from False Bay. The vineyard is North-West facing and managed by Chris Williams. Planted in 2005, the Foundry Grenache Noir 2020 is the fourth vintage. VITICULTURE This is the first vintage from our own vineyards in the Voor Paardeberg, planted in 2000. The vineyards are planted on low vigour, well-drained, granitic origin soils. The vines are managed to retain a healthy balance between grape production and growth, and the crop was reduced to 5.5 tons per hectare. The mature vines are naturally low yielding, and all damaged or unripe grapes were removed before harvest. The fruit was uniformly ripe and was picked on the basis of analysis, taste and vine physiology. Wine Advocate 91 points. The light red 2021 Tragolargo is a pure fruit-driven and young Monastrell from a vineyard on sandy and limestone soils in the Casa Balaguer property. It was picked early to preserve acidity and fermented with one-third full clusters and the rest uncrushed. In 2021 there was a heat wave that affected the whites, but they consider it a very good year for reds. It has 13.5% alcohol and a medium body, bottled unoaked, primary, young and fleshy. 25,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022.  

Each varietal is vinified & aged individually in French oak barrels before the final blending process. Shiraz adds the generous mouthfeel, Grenache the spice and cherry-like sweetness and Mataro the backbone, savoury edge and fragrance. Balance is crucial, each varietal’s contribution is evident, yet nothing competes for your attention. A medium-bodied palate with red and black berries. Layers of spice, dark plum, cassis and berry fruit adorn the palate - pleasantly held together by fine tannins. Smooth & delicious.

Source blocks were selected for spice and lift, representing a fresher and more layered version of ‘Barossa Valley shiraz’. 15% whole bunch used to increase spice and structure, with 100% old oak allowing fruit to take the fore. A medium-bodied palate with juicy dark berry fruits, blueberries, violets, graphite and flint, held together with fine, supple tannins. Wine Advocate 91+ points. 100% Garnacha. The change started in 2022 is even more noticeable in the 2023 Sindicat La Figuera, especially after the experience of the previous year with an earlier harvest to keep more freshness. This year was even more extreme, and the wine is more voluptuous, with a decadent, fruit-driven nose with abundant notes of beeswax and honey intermixed with ripe berry fruit and flowers. This is expressive and a bit heady with 14.5% alcohol, and it has a rich and juicy palate with very fine tannins. Wine Advocate 93 points. The nose of the 2023 Dido was like Garnacha cotton candy, tender and attractive, perfumed and juicy. The wine has 14% alcohol and the exuberance from the vintage but with a seamless palate with very fine tannins, always with the soil austerity and the rocky sensation.
