Etna has become the most exciting up and coming region in Italy in the last decade and shares similar qualitative traits to the other great wine making Italian regions of Tuscany and Piedmont. Like Barolo and Brunello, the Etna red wines centres on a single varietal that has a great affinity to express terroir. The 2015 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni is a darkly extracted and thick expression with inky-black fruit aromas that are followed by finer accents of licorice, smoke and tar. For centuries now, the beautiful red grapes of the Barbera varietal have been grown in Italy, where they are prized for their unusual high acid content and low tannins, brought about by their thin skins. The Barbera grape varietal thrives in warmer climates, and has had some success overseas in the new world, where its strongly aromatic flavors of intense hedgerow fruits make it a favorite with wineries and wine drinkers looking for a grape which offers plenty of interesting characteristics. Interestingly, the differences between young and aged wines made from this varietal are quite significant, with younger bottles holding a plethora of...

Dosed with quite generous new oak scent on the nose, which I'd imagine might rile some Barolo fans - but the quality of flavour is excellent, and there is plenty of fruit, spice and structure to match. Richard Hemming MW. Barolo has ancient origins. Documents testify to the growing of Nebbiolo in the Visette area as long ago as the XII century, when the Saracen invasions advanced inland into Piedmont from the Ligurian coast. These influences led to the old centre of the village of Monforte being named “Saracca”. The name Visette itself comes from the local dialect word for the vine,...

Given that Tuscany has long held the spotlight for all sangiovese wines we were both curious and skeptical. That was until we tried her wines. They are outstanding and represent excellent value. This is the flagship red of the winery. WA 92. The 2017 Alto Adige Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva Quintessenz is a polished and elegant expression of the grape. There is plenty of dark fruit on the bouquet, with blackberry, cherry and plum, but this hot-vintage expression also shows a slightly exotic quality. I am reminded of Indian spice or crushed coriander seed. The wine is fermented in large wooden casks with extended skin macerations lasting four weeks. The wine undergoes its second fermentation in oak, and it ages in barrique for an additional 18 months. This wine wraps thickly over the palate, and there's a touch of phenolic bitterness...

James Suckling 95 points. This features a very floral edge of rose petals and cranberries at first, marked by clove and spice character. Medium-bodied and so elegant and precise on the palate, with a touch of nutmeg character on the finish. Very mineral, complex and driven. Drink now. WINERY NOTES: Winemaking: Extended maceration on the skins at controlled-temperatures (24°C) in large oak vats. After aging in French barrels for 14 months, the wine is kept in bottle for nearly one year prior to commercial release. Tasting Notes: While Pinot Nero is originally from Burgundy, the grape has found a second home in our province for Pinot Nero has...

Rated 96 by James Suckling Plums and dried flowers with violets and lavender and hints of sandalwood. Full-bodied, dense and fruity with a big and juicy palate, yet the round and firm tannins hold it all together and give it form. Drink after 2021. Rated 95 by Vinous Media Bright deep red. Musky, bracing aromas and flavors of red cherry and orange peel, tarragon and violet. Full and tactile, with racy acidity giving the wine’s deep flavors real cut and grip. Finishes with lingering saline nuances on the clean, refined back end. A rather uncompromising style of Brunello, but very true to type; this will also age extremely well. Capanna has...
