Tre Bicchieri, Gambero Rosso. Wine Advocate 95 points. This bottle is a true ambassador for Umbria. You get ample varietal tones in the 2016 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni, with bitter chocolate and baking spice, but Caprai does a terrific job of softening up and fleshing out the Sagrantino grape to display a more contemporary and ultimately more approachable and versatile wine. It boasts a huge, bold and opulent mouthfeel with plenty of structure and determination. This was a release of 15,000 bottles. ML Jul 2021.

"Dark-skinned berry, menthol, new leather, blue flower and baking spice aromas take center stage. On the radiant, full-bodied palate, vibrant acidity lifts red cherry, raspberry compote, star anise, clove and tobacco while youthfully taut, fine-grained tannins provide firm support. Hold on to this for even more complexity once it unwinds and develops. Drink 2023–2038." - 95/100, Wine Enthusiast.

The finish is fruity and tannic at the same time." 92 - WINE ENTHUSIAST, Sept, 2020 "Underbrush, violet, spiced plum and menthol aromas slowly emerge from the glass. James Suckling 99 points. This is so perfumed and seductive, with blackberries, cherries, dried flowers and perfume. It’s full-bodied and tight with very fine tannins. Really structured and long. Superb tannin texture. So fine, yet so powerful. This is an incredible combination of fruit and structure. Old-vine magic. Drink after 2026. JS.
98 Points, James Suckling, jamessuckling.com: "The subtlety and perfumed nature of this wine is enchanting, offering flowers, orange peel and cherries. Wonderful ripe strawberries, too. Full-bodied, but not over the top, with tannins that are polished and run the length of the wine. It’s tight, but gives you every indication of terrific wine. You want to drink it now, and you probably should do because it’s so alluring. Yet it will age beautifully as well. James Suckling 97 points. 20th year anniversary special bottling. James Suckling Notes 97 Points, "Very attractive combination of dried fruit and spices with black cherries and plums. Aromas of flowers and sandalwood, too. Full-bodied and very refined, yet intense, with plush, velvety tannins that are wonderfully integrated and intertwined with the fruit. Ripe center palate. Tight at the end, suggesting the need for some serious bottle age. Very structured. Try after 2025." 8/21.
97 Points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter: "Wild roses and wild strawberries, the nose has a lovely fragrance and expression. Lifted and bright, this has such a beautiful delicacy to it, a creamy, chalkiness comes from the fine tannins with bright, succulent strawberry and raspberry leaf elements. You feel the savory side too, the sweet vanilla spice and dried herb aspect which counter the fruit and the high acidity. I adore the finesse here, the sharp fruit giving the energy and the chalky texture giving the layers. Feels well-controlled, and powerful yet delivered with poise. It doesn't have so much overt weight, it's definitely...

Awarded Gold Medal and "People's Crown" , voted by readers of Vini Buoni d'Italia. 2 Bicchieri Gambero Rosso. Raffaella Bissoni is a remarkable woman whom we first met in 2015. We had been told by the conoscenti that she has been leading a quiet revolution in Romagna to reinstate the region as an internationally reknowned producer of sangiovese. Given that Tuscany has long held the spotlight for all sangiovese wines we were both curious and skeptical. That was until we tried her wines. They are outstanding and represent excellent value. The winery now exports to 10 countries, with the USA being the largest taker....
WA 92 The 2012 Barolo Fossati is slightly more inward-looking and introspective compared to the other cru expressions presented this vintage. The Fossati vineyard is characterized by sandy soils and the wines made here veer towards extreme elegance and finesse. Indeed, this Barolo walks with light footsteps. The bouquet releases wild berry fruit, white cherry and dry licorice root. The wine will take on more volume and power as it continues its bottle evolution. ML Jul 2017.
93James Suckling Lots of dried berry, peach and cedar character. Full body, layered and powerful. 92Vinous / IWC Wild herb, smoke, incense, licorice and blood orange give the 2012 Barolo Liste a decidedly exotic.

The Cantina Kaltern 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Nero delivers all the goods: freshness, elegance and a no-fuss style to pair with white meat or even a spaghetti allo scoglio with seafood and chopped tomato, if served a few degrees chilled. Schiava is the local native red grape grown in the region for over a thousand years. This example comes from vones of 20 to 50 years of age. TASTING NOTES – brilliant, cherry red hue – flowery and fruity tones, violets and red berries – very juicy and full, round soft finish with a dubdued undertone of bitter almonds RECOMMENDATION This wine is ideal as an aperitif, an accompaniment to appetizers, or to typical Tyrolean fare such as speck and sausage, but also to lighter meats and mild cheeses.
Wine Advocate 95 points. The Cantina Kaltern 2018 Alto Adige Merlot Riserva Kunst.Stück is released in numbered bottles (I tasted bottle number 494 of just 3,000 produced) with a pretty, artist-created front label. This Merlot is soft and plush, with broad richness and smoothness that spreads evenly over the palate, imparting rich density all the while. It also delivers ripe blackberry, black cherry, leather, tar and sweet spice. You'd do well to enjoy it with some grilled sausages in front of the fire after a day of skiing. Wine Advocate 94 points. The Cantina Kaltern 2018 Alto Adige Cabernet Sauvignon Riserva Quintessenz comes out with gangbuster intensity, showing shapely tones of dark fruit, mature blackberry and dark plum. After 18 months in barrique (with 50% new barrels), the wine is nicely enhanced with oak spice that comes across with subtle layers of toast and smoke; however, the wood regime is never overdone. In fact, the cool-climate freshness associated with mountain wines is what gives this hearty red that extra kick of energy to enjoy with a well-marbled steak on the grill. This was a release of about 8,000 bottles.ML Sep 2021.

Aged in barrique for 12 months with six months cement and six months bottle, the wine delivers good fruit weight with soft tannins and broad intensity. In that regard, this is not your classic northern Italian Pinot Noir. This 11,000-bottle release could pair with gamey foods such as wild game hen, thanks to that extra intensity. ML Dec 2022. Rated 93 by Wine Advocate The Capanna 2017 Brunello di Montalcino shows fresh primary fruit initially, but the bouquet is otherwise footed in ethereal tones of balsam herb, cola, crushed flowers and autumnal leaf. The wine delivers purity and a nice level of complexity that flirts with both varietal and territory-specific characteristics. It registers 15% alcohol, but thankfully it's not too intrusive. That power and the wine's structure, with some mild tannic bitterness, plays against the delicate quality of fruit you get here. Production is 35,000 bottles. Rated 96 by Vinous Media The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva wafts up with a classic Capanna profile, rich yet elegant, with masses of crushed black cherries, sweet herbs, cloves and hints of cigar box. This is velvety yet not weighty, with a salty core of minerals and brisk acids that enliven its citrus-tinged red berries and exotic inner spice. While persistent and structured, the 2016 keeps you coming back to the glass, savory and saline in character with grippy tannins, but also a tug of residual tension that keeps the expression unexpectedly fresh. This is a tremendous Brunello Riserva in the making, and all it needs is time.
