James Suckling 94 points. An exotic blend of 70% sangiovese, 15% sagrantino and 15% merlot. The wine was first produced in 1993 and has become a house staple. It is aged for 20 months in new and used French oak barriques then released 6 months after bottling. This extended aging allows the complex flavours to integrate. WA 94. Marco Caprai strikes again with yet another beautiful vintage of his top-shelf red. The 2013 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni is a darkly saturated and thickly extracted wine with a full and generous style. The wine is redolent of dark fruit, tobacco and smoky barbecue. However, the real protagonist is spice: baking and Christmas spice, to be exact. The wine is firmly structured with some tannic astringency that will soften with extra cellar aging.ML Dec 2017. Winery Notes: A wine that symbolises not only a winery, but the whole appellation, Arnaldo Caprai's Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG “25 Anni” has shown all the potential of...

For centuries now, the beautiful red grapes of the Barbera varietal have been grown in Italy, where they are prized for their unusual high acid content and low tannins, brought about by their thin skins. The Barbera grape varietal thrives in warmer climates, and has had some success overseas in the new world, where its strongly aromatic flavors of intense hedgerow fruits make it a favorite with wineries and wine drinkers looking for a grape which offers plenty of interesting characteristics. Interestingly, the differences between young and aged wines made from this varietal are quite significant, with younger bottles holding a plethora of...

Wine Spectator 93 points. Luca Maroni 92 points. Veronelli 3 Stars. WA 91. Here's a sassy and spicy expression of Merlot. The 2014 Poggio Ai Merli is a tight and slightly nervous wine from a cool vintage. The otherwise mellow Merlot grape shows tart aromas of red fruit and cherry with spice, tobacco and white chocolate. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in new French barrique. Only 3,000 bottles are produced. Poggio ai Merli performs very well in cooler vintages (2013 is a case point). But the 2014 vintage offers a lower textural threshold and moderate persistence. ML Dec 2016.
