Platter Wine Guide 4.5 Stars.
‘Could Meerlust follow up on its spectacular 2021 Rubicon? The answer is not quite, but that's mostly a reflection of the hotter vintage. Sourced from the estate's four distinct terroirs, this is a very classy cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. Coffee bean, cedarwood and fresh herb aromas segue into a palate that has good density and concentration, bramble, plum and dark berry fruit, a top note of graphite and nuanced tannins. 2026-35’ – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2025, 96/100.
The 2022 Rubicon is a harmonious blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Each grape variety was fermented separately before undergoing malolactic fermentation in small oak barrels and large oak vats. Following an 8-month maturation period in oak, the components were expertly blended and aged for an additional 10 months in oak before bottling.
This young wine displays a deep, vibrant ruby red hue. The complex aroma unfolds with notes of violet, ripe black plum, blackberry, cassis, cedar wood, bouquet garni, and potpourri spice. The palate is rich and intense, offering a core of fresh dark fruit, well-integrated tannins, and bright acidity. The wine is balanced and elegant, with the potential to age gracefully for up to 20 years when stored under optimal conditions.
