James Suckling 94 points. Gold Medal, UK Sommeliers' Awards. “This has a really intense and beautiful nose of pressed violets, lavender, bay leaf, heather and dried hibiscus tea. Full-bodied and big with a wallop of very chewy tannins that remain in tune, thanks to bright acidity. Long on the finish.” JS. This is the single vineyard "grand cru" of the winery for the chianti style. Chianti Classico Riserva Il Poggiale comes from a single vineyard which has consistently achieved the highest scores for elegance and typicality. A wine that shows the enormous potential of Sangioveto.
Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93 points. James Suckling 91 points. “A ripe and plummy Chianti Classico that shows a lot of blackberry pastille, in addition to vanilla and spice box. Round and chewy on the palate with plenty of dark fruit and a concentrated finish.” JS. Winery Notes. Tasting notes: Typical ruby red color, which tends to become garnet red as it ages. The nose has an intense scent of cherry and a fineness that increases more and more over time. On the palate it is rather dry and harmonious, but also slightly tannic, with a flavour that becomes more and more velvety over time. Chianti Classico Reserve Only native vines,...
100% Cabernet Wine Advocate 94 points. Vinous 94 points. Wine Spectator 93 points. Wine Advocate: "The wine represents a pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon made at the highest standards in reduced quantities. Only 2,600 bottles were produced."This is an impressive effort and a wine that will warm your palate and your soul on a chilly winter evening (preferably served with a grilled steak). The 2013 Coniale is a pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that opens to an inky dark and impenetrable appearance. This is a seductive wine with an irresistible array of plump cherry and super ripe blackberry flavors. It is structured and determined,...
Antonio Galloni , Vinous, 95 points. Wine Spectator 95 points. "This powerful red offers fine balance and richness, showcasing black cherries, black currant , leather, tobacco and graphite flavours. Vibrant and set for a long lige ahead, revealing terrific energy on the lingering aftertaste. Only 300 cases made." James Suckling 94 points “This is a very impressive wine, heading into ultra-ripe territory with brambleberries, dark plums, treacle tart, morello cherries, dark chocolate and vanilla. Yet, it remains on point. Full-bodied and very decadent on the palate. The powerful tannins carry layer upon layer of dark fruit long and chewy on...
WA 96 points, James Suckling 95 points, Dr Wine 98 points, Gambero Rosso 3 glasses, Bibenda 5 grappoli, Veronelli Super 3 stars, Vinous 95+. This is the flagship wine of Paolo Panerai's famous Tuscan estate. The wine has been adorned with just about every accolade on the planet, including inclusion in Wine Spectators Top 100 and numerous 3 glasses awards from Gambero Rosso. The blend is 85% sangiovese and 15% malvasia nera. Always a top class wine. The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby,...
This is the flagship wine of the estate. One of the world's truly outstanding wines. Anthony Galloni 98/100 "The 2015 Sodi di San Niccolo is just stratospheric. That's pretty much all there is to it. Plush, deep and explosive, the 2015 possesses magnificent depth. The 15% Malvasia Nera gives tannic backbone and energy to balance the wine`s natural richness. Sweet red cherry, cedar, smoke, tobacco and locorice build in a racy, flamboyant Sodi that hits all the right notes. In a word - Stunning!" August 2019 James Suckling 96 points. “Explosive fruit on the nose with dark cherries and plums, but there are also lots of fresh fragrances here,...
The new limited edition that blends the best labels by Castellare in the stellar 2013 vintage. Only 3333 bottles produced. There are all the 36 iconic birds of the 36 vintages of Castellare di Castellina on the label of the new limited edition Le 33+3 Vendemmie. The delicate images depicting the most beautiful endangered birds, a sign of the company's constant commitment to winemaking without using synthetic chemicals in the vineyard, embellish a wine with a very beautiful structure and elegance that brings together the best of Castellare's production: I Sodi di S. Niccolò, that has always been at the top of the international rankings,...
Wine Spectator 93 points. Luca Maroni 92 points. Veronelli 3 Stars. WA 91. Here's a sassy and spicy expression of Merlot. The 2014 Poggio Ai Merli is a tight and slightly nervous wine from a cool vintage. The otherwise mellow Merlot grape shows tart aromas of red fruit and cherry with spice, tobacco and white chocolate. The wine is fermented in stainless steel and aged in new French barrique. Only 3,000 bottles are produced. Poggio ai Merli performs very well in cooler vintages (2013 is a case point). But the 2014 vintage offers a lower textural threshold and moderate persistence. ML Dec 2016.
Wine Advocate 97+. The 2016 Poggio ai Merli is gorgeous. That's the short and the long of it. Merlot shows some of its best performances ever in Tuscany in the 2016 vintage. This wine is exceedingly smooth and silky, yet its tightly knit fiber supports a generous profile that ranges from dark cherry to spice, to tobacco and fresh potting soil. On the palate, the wine is rich and large in scope, yet it never leaves behind any residual heaviness. Castellare di Castellina has created a true beauty (with only 4,000 precious bottles made). ML Nv 2018.
~ Buy Six and Pay $75 net per Bottle ~ WA 94 Only 3000 bottles made. The 2012 Campanaio, a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend, bursts from the glass with black cherries, spices, mint, licorice, crushed rocks and new leather. The 2012 boasts tremendous depth, richness and pure intensity. This is a fabulous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. Proprietor Alessandro Cellai is best known for the wines he makes at Paolo Panerai’s numerous properties, including Castellare in Chianti Classico and Rocca di Frassinello in Maremma. Podere Monastero is Cellai’s own property located in Castellina in Chianti, in the heart of the Chianti Classico...
WA 94, JS 94. ~ Buy Six and Pay $75 net per Bottle ~ The 2013 Campanaio is inspired by the great wines of Bordeaux, and represents a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in equal parts. Grapes are grown in limestone-rich soils and offer a great deal of precision and focus. The classic vintage has been especially kind to early-ripening varieties such as Merlot. Alessandro Cellai practices an extreme harvest in which each berry is selected by hand. The wine shows deep, dark concentration and is aged in oak for 12 months. This is a beautiful and memorable wine that will continue a slow evolution. Podere Monastero is the private estate run by...
-Buy 6 or more and pay 75sgd per bottle- WA 92+. The front label of the 2015 La Pineta displays the name "Pinot Nero" written in seven different languages. This is a Tuscan interpretation of a grape with wide-reaching international appeal. The bouquet is gorgeous, albeit still very under the influence of the oak. You need to give this wine a few more years to reach better integration. The mouthfeel is fresh and spicy on the tongue with flavors of spearmint and dried ginger. The effect is super intense and all-encompassing. This is a different expression of Pinot Noir for sure but there is something totally irresistible nonetheless. ML Nov...
Decanter WWA 95 points, Luca Maroni 95 points, James Suckling 94 points. Voted no5 best of Italian Wines on an aggregated score of all major critics by Gentleman Magazine Italy. (The No1 award went to Castellare di Castellina I Sodi di San Niccolo 2013) The highest expression of Rocca delle Macìe winemaking, the Gran Selezione Sergio Zingarelli has a history that stretches way back, since it is the fruit of many years' work in the vineyards on the Le Macìe estate at Castellina in Chianti, where the Sangiovese grape comes into its own like nowhere else. This wine encapsulates the very best of the Chianti Classico production zone and its...
Luca Maroni "Best Wines of Italy"....98 points and Awarded Best Red Wine of the Year. Gold Medal, UK Sommeliers' Wine awards, Gambero Rosso 3 Glasses, Wine Advocate 94 points, Wine Spectator 94 points. This wine is destined for greatness. It is Paolo Panerai's direct challenge to Masseto (its neighbour). No expense or care is spared in hunting down the prize of being Italy's best and most famous red wine. Rocca di Frassinello is a joint venture between the mercurial Castellare di Castellina and the might house of Lafite Rothschild. Watch this space for the next few years. Unfortunately for us all, global demand will inevitably drive prices...
