55/45% cabernet sauvignon/shiraz; aged for 18 months in oak before barrel selection. Named after the indigenous name for ‘green paddock’, the Malleea was first made in 1996, and since only in exceptional years. The '22 vintage feels very well integrated and harmonious on release. The spectrum of blue, purple and black berried fruit stands tall, with some acaí berries and swathes of rich dark chocolate. Clove studs, dried bay leaf and olive flecks. Light on its feet, with plenty of potential for further detail and unfurling of spice and savoury cocoa nib notes. Drink now or cellar for another 10–12 years. 95 points.

“The Malleea” by Majella continues the great Australian tradition of Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz blends. “Malleea” an Aboriginal term meaning “green paddock” is a great descriptor for the green, lush pastures and vineyards of the limestone coast region in the South Eastern portion of South Australia. First made in 1996, and only produced when growing conditions are perfect for producing premium quality wines. (95 points Halliday)
