VINOUS 91-93 Burghound 92 "A very pretty nose offers up ripe aromas composed by essence of red cherry, spice and lavender-suffused aromas. There is a lovely and refined mouth feel to the caressing middle weight flavors that possess solid intensity and energy that carries over to the well-balanced and markedly firm finale. This excellent effort is going to require at least some patience initially to unwind and ultimately should reward 12 to 15 years of bottle aging." The palate impression is also almost liqueur-like with lavish richness to the full-bodied and palate saturating flavors that brim with dry extract on the firm and dusty finish. The all whole-bunch 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes is 85% Grenache, with the balance a mix of Mourvèdre and Syrah. The vines are all 80 to 90 years old, selected from parcels in Brusquières, Gardiole, Mont-Redon and Pignan. Glorious raspberry and cherry fruit picks up hints of mint and some stemmy notes, but they're remarkably well-integrated and should be completely absorbed within a couple of years. About 40% was destemmed in this textbook vintage, the fruit coming from 40 different parcels around the appellation. Floral and raspberry notes emerge on the nose, while the palate is full-bodied but silky textured, ending on subtle shadings of Provence herbs and licorice. WA 97 The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape la Folie is a special cuvée that has only been made three times: in 2007, 2015 and 2016. As Nicolas Boiron points out, it's a "modern style" of Châteauneuf, completely destemmed and aged in demi-muids and barriques, with a fair proportion of those barrels being new. Mocha cedar notes mark the nose at this early age, while the flavors resemble caramelized cherries and baking spices. Full-bodied, rich, creamy and undeniably plush, it's still recognizable as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, showing velvety hints of chocolate on the long finish. Pommard is for many the most familiar Burgundy appellation. The village itself lies approximately 2 miles south of Beaune, and the total appellation is fairly extensive, covering 300 hectares, flanking a narrow valley which leads back into the Côte d'Or hinterland. The wines of Pommard are quite different from those of the neighbouring villages. They tend to be deeper and more concentrated than Beaune or Volnay wines and have a sumptuous perfume and bite without being too tannic.

Les Chaumes is a large Premier Cru climat located at the southern end of the Vosne-Romanee appellation in the Cote de Nuits. This vineyard, which is lower on the Cote d'Or than many of the appellation's most famous vineyards, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Les Chaumes Premier Cru wines are full bodied and supple, but not as refined as their Grand Cru neighbors.
