WE 92, JS 90-91, WA 89. Grand Cru Classe, Graves. The Leveque family has hit pay dirt again with this 2012 Graves. An inky, bluish/purple color, and an equal part blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the wine shows terrific fruit, great purity, graphite and underlying earthy burning ember notes. It has medium body and loads of fruit, depth and light tannin in the finish, showing this wine can be drunk early, or cellared for up to a decade. A sleeper of the vintage. Not surprisingly, Hubert de Bouard is their consultant winemaker. RPJ April 2015.
~ Buy Six Bottles and $55 net per Bottle ~ Same owners as Malartic Lagraviere. WA 91 Deep, rich, red and black currant fruit, plum, soy and Asian spice are present in this inky/purple wine, which is medium to full-bodied with supple tannins, outstanding concentration and very impressive aromatics. Drink it over the next 12-20 years.RPJ April 2015.
~Buy Six Bottles and Pay $52 net Each ~ WA 90-92. The 2013 Lanessan has quite a punchy, fruit-driven bouquet with well-integrated oak, a Lanessan with more sense of purpose than I have found in recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied with fine blackberry and raspberry fruit, fine tannin, leading to a smooth and harmonious finish, which lingers nicely in the mouth. You know, this is the best Lanessan for a long time, perchance because Mon. De Bouard is consulting? NM Apr 2016. Floral nose and good firmness and depth. This wine is always slow to start and will develop well. 2020-2030 Steven Spurrier - Decanter Suckling (92-93) "Blackberry...
WINERY NOTES: In the vineyard... The vines are distributed on several parcels located in bottom of the hillside in Nuits Saint Georges. Gently sloping, on deep brown ground of silt and clays, with strong minerals and of 20 years average of age, they represent more than 2 hectares. In the glass... This wine is raised partially out of barrels of one or two wines. Our Bougogne presents with average color, moderately crimson in its youth, then becoming orange ruby after a few years of aging in bottle. The cherry and blackcurrant flavors are marked in its youth, after which appear animal fur and humus mixed with candied fruits.
WINERY NOTES: In the vineyard... Gently sloping, located in the upper portion of the Clos Vougeot, this parcel of 55 ares shows at the same time qualities of exceptional soil and of the grape variety. The vines are 40 years old. The stony and silty-claey soil consists of colluviums limestones of average depth and rests on a marly base. In the glass... Deep red in color, this wine is harmonious, racy and elegant. A breeding from 70% new barrels develops its exceptional aromatic intensity, with red and black fruit flavors, like cherry, blackberry and blackcurrant. Often austere in its youth, you will find that with age the flavors of damp...
WINERY NOTES: In the vineyard... This parcel of 46 acres consists of a kind of terrace on a steep slope, in mid slope (275m). The shallow ground of brown-limestone, consists of gravel, clayey silts, on hard limestone. The forty year old vines are of sufficient age to produce balanced and concentrated grapes. In the glass... Cehe name would come from small wild plum trees found in certain waste lands and whose tannins cling to the gums. This Nuits is thus a sensual and sharp wine, with a rather masculine personality, perhaps not pleasing to the untrained amateurs. Its power confers an excellent potential of aging. With age, it will develop...
In the vineyard... Located in northern Nuits-Saint-Georges, this part of the vineyard is situated on brown limestones and stony grounds, with fine texture of clay and silts on the surface, and more clayey underneath. The presence of marls rich in fossil oysters gives this wine its characteristics. The vineyard is rather shallowly inclined, on 41 acres, and the vines are 30 to 55 years old. In the glass... This Premier Cru is not the most characteristic of the Nuits Saint Georges appellation. As its name indicates, it presents great roundness and smoothness, reminiscent of wines closer to Vosne Romanée. It is characterized by a marked...
In the vineyard... On a shallow slope at an altitude of 250m, this parcel of 42 ares is 55 years old. The soil is rather deep, not very stony, with some clay and silt on the surface and clay in depth. It consists of oligocene and plio-pleistocene material. In the glass... One finds in this Vosne Romanée the peony, the rose, followed by leather and, with age, humus. It is beautiful with a flexible and solid structure which is accompanied by delicate mineral notes. It can easily be cellared for ten years. At the table... An elaborate cuisine, such as a subtle fowl with crystallized prunes, a duck in orange sauce, and fine cheeses will...
WINERY NOTES: In the vineyard... The beautiful site of this one hectare vineyard, steeply sloped at the entry of the dale of Concoeur, is intensified by its high altitude (280 - 300m), its south-eastern exposure and a stony nature. The shallow calcareous soil, on a hard limestone subsoil, is at the origin of a concentrated, highly structured wine. The vines of about thirty years have reached the age of maturity and balance. In the glass... This Premier Cru of Vosne Romanée is perfectly in the style of the village : Silky tannins which support floral notes of hawthorn, wild rose, violet, cherry and blackcurrant. Aging is particularly...
In the vineyard... Resulting from several parcels representing 1.90 ha, one of these is gently sloped to an altitude of 250 m, in ground of rather deep silt on clay, with vines from 35 to 55 years old. The other part, 25 years old, comes from a parcel on the top of the slope (300 with 325m), which is steeply sloping, on humus-bearing black soil, gravelo-stony, very calcareous. In the glass... Vinified separately, the wines resulting from these 2 parcels are assembled just before the bottling, after a breeding on dregs in 50% of new barrels. Vosne Romanée is the flower of the domaine. Scents of cherry and rose, this wine becomes complex with...
Jancis Robinson 15.5/20. "Very fresh forest-floor notes. Some grainy tannins and some suggestion of very slightly stewed fruit, but certainly not overpriced." Winemaker Notes A pretty, pale-ish purple color with a stylish, fragrant nose of flowers and fruit. There is plenty of primary fruit present, but just a little more serious than you may expect at this price point. It is noticeably more structured on the palate though. The fruit stretches out to a medium length finish.
This is a rich and powerful wine derived from 30 year old vines (1.17 ha). 20% new oak, natural yeasts, minimal filtration.
Tim Atkins 90 points. Jancis Robinson Wine Reviews: Cask sample. Light to mid crimson. Riper and more expressive than the Clos Rousseau. Lifted, fragrant, full of spiced fruit and vitality. Well balanced, easy-going. (JH) Drink 2017-2022 16
50 year old vines, 15 months in oak; "An elegant wine, quite powerful, with red fruits on the nose. " - (JG)
Aloxe-Corton Premier Cru wines are those made under the strictest conditions of the Aloxe-Corton appellation, from grapes exclusively grown within officially classified Premier Cru vineyard sites. Aloxe-Corton's vineyards were classified in 1982 by the INAO, the French government organization responsible for the country's appellation system. About one-third of the vineyard land within the Aloxe-Corton commune boundaries has been granted Premier Cru status, resulting in the creation of 15 climats. Given that more than half of the commune had already been marked as Grand Cru, this is a respectable proportion.
Le Clos du Roi is a climat of the Corton Grand Cru appellation in the Cote de Beaune district of Burgundy. This walled site is located high on the eastern slopes of the Montagne de Corton hill, and is characterized by pebbly, marlstone soils rich in iron oolite. Wines from the Clos du Roi are known for having an excellent balance of power and finesse.
Pommard is a village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy famous for producing powerful and richly flavored red wines. They are made from Pinot Noir grapes, with which the commune's vineyards are almost exclusively planted. The Pommard appellation covers only red wines. It's notable that Pommard and its immediate neighbor, Volnay (renowned for its smooth, delicate reds), are less than a mile apart (1400 yards/1.3km, to be precise) yet their wines are so different. Even more striking is the fact that the most-southerly vineyards of Pommard are separated from the most-northerly vineyards of Volnay by no more than an imaginary line: the...
Volnay is a village in the Cote de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy, renowned for making some of the smoothest, most delicate red wines of the southern Cote d'Or. Located between Pommard (famous for its powerful reds) and Meursault (the home of rich whites), Volnay is fortunate to have a forte to distinguish it from its more-prestigious neighbors. Over the centuries, the wines of Pommard and Volnay have alternately shared popularity, according to the fashions of the age. When powerful, full-bodied wines are in favor (as in the current global market), Pommard enjoys the limelight. But when silkier, smoother wines are in demand, Volnay takes...
Les Beaux Monts is a Premier Cru climat of the Vosne-Romanee appellation, in the Cote de Nuits subregion of Burgundy. This vineyard, like most of its neighbors on this part of the Cote d'Or, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir, making a full-bodied yet elegant wine with ripe fruit characters. The vineyard is along the very northern border of the Vosne-Romanee commune, situated at the edge of the large Echezeaux Grand Cru climat (although at a slightly higher elevation). This is not Les Beaux Monts' only Grand Cru neighbor: the Richebourg climat is just along the hillside a short way to the south.
Les Chaumes is a large Premier Cru climat located at the southern end of the Vosne-Romanee appellation in the Cote de Nuits. This vineyard, which is lower on the Cote d'Or than many of the appellation's most famous vineyards, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir. Les Chaumes Premier Cru wines are full bodied and supple, but not as refined as their Grand Cru neighbors.
Vosne-Romanee Les Suchots Wine Les Suchots is the largest Premier Cru climat within the Vosne-Romanee appellation of Burgundy. This vineyard separates the Echezeaux and Romanee-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru vineyards and, like its prestigious neighbors, is planted entirely to Pinot Noir. The climat's wines are lush and full-bodied with earthy, spicy characters. The vineyard sits along the northern border of the Vosne-Romanee commune, at the base of the Cote d'Or escarpment. Its position among Grand Cru vineyards (it also counts Richebourg as a neighbor) has led many to question why it was passed over during the Grand Cru classifications of 1936....
Dark ruby colour, with purple reflections Intense nose of macerated cherries and licorice. In the mouth the wine is full-bodied with a generous attack, a pleasant freshness and elegant tannins. This well-balanced wine shows a typical expression of southern Rhône wine with thyme and rosemary aftertaste.
Winery Notes: The reds are quite dark in colour, their shades varying from deep rubythrough crimson to garnet. While young, the wine’s aroma suggests a spring garden with small red fruits (raspberry, strawberry) and black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry). These intensify with age and evolve into peony and jasmine, preserved and brandied fruits, pistachio, prune, leather, truffle, mushroom and cinnamon. The deep soil begets a vigorous, full-bodied Pinot Noir, robust yet refined. Tender and fruity, this wine reaches its peak after 3 to 5 years in the cellar, revealing a firm and well-built body, richly chewy and with pleasing tannins.
WA 91 Made from 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, with a saturated ruby/purple color and dense black cherry and plum-like fruit pushing ripeness to the limit, on the palate the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure, ripe and nicely textured, with soft, round tannins. This is a very successful effort from Rol Valentin that can be approached early on or drunk over the following 10-15 years.RPJ April 2015.
WA 96 The 2012 is another truly great wine from Troplong Mondot. It’s always sentimental to taste this wine, realizing that proprietress Christine Valette (the larger-than-life heart and soul behind this estate) has passed away. She was one of the bright, shining stars of Bordeaux. Nevertheless, her legacy is certainly well-established, and the quality of this wine is beyond reproach. Inky bluish purple, its great notes of cassis, blackberry, licorice are followed by a full-bodied, opulently textured wine with stunning concentration, purity and overall balance. It should drink well for 20-25 years and turn out to be one of the great...
