Albert Morot Beaune 1er Cru Les Aigrots 2018 Rouge (BH 90)

SG$75.00
SG$75.00

Next to the famous Clos des Mouches, in the middle of the hillside, our Aigrots are oriented to the East. This climate, with stony soil and rich in silt and clay, produces full-bodied and generous red wines (75 acres) to be enjoyed with grilled red meats or in sauce. "A higher-toned nose displays a note of freshly crushed cherry to the spicy dark pinot fruit-scented aromas. There is good detail and vibrancy if not quite the same density to the stony middle weight flavors that exhibit solid if not exceptional depth on the mildly warm finale." BH 90

This 1.27-hectare vineyard (3 acres) is located at the bottom of the slope. It enjoys a soil composed mainly of clay and loams. Pottery fragments found in this vineyard show that this was a farming settlement in Gallo-Roman times. After the farm disappeared, the site remained without vines for a long time before being planted again. “Sanvignes” [vineless] then changed to “Cent-Vignes” [hundred vines] – since a plot with vines cannot be “Vineless”! These reds are remarkable for their colour and the delicacy of their aromas. In the mouth, they combine complexity with mellowness. "A slightly cooler though still notably ripe nose...

This small plot (1.2 acres / 0.3 ha) is located at the foot of the slope. The name “Les Grèves” comes from the composition of the soil: light and stony. The red wines present fine fruit notes and delicate flavours. They are perfect with a wild mushroom quiche, red meats or cheeses such as Cîteaux, Reblochon, etc. "Here too there is a similar mentholated nose on the spiced plum, dark cherry and warm earth-suffused aromas that are trimmed in enough wood to mention. The delicious and energetic middle weight plus flavors display focused power on the moderately austere finish where a touch of dryness slowly emerges. I suspect that this will...

This plot of 67 acres is located at the top of the hill and looks to the southeast. It enjoys a limestone soil mixed with silt, sand and clay. This climat extends on both Beaune and Savigny communes. This name comes from Marcomans (lat marcomani or men of the border), a West Germanic tribe existing until the fourth century; this type of Germanic declination is frequently found after the invasion of the Franks for names of rivers around Beaune. It appears in literature in the form Marconain in 1270 and Marconnay in 1294; a stream thus took its source in this locality. Comparable to certain grands crus, the wines have distinction, power and...

Facing south-west, this plot of 77 ares (2 acres) has a soil combining loam, clay and limestone. This vineyard, “protected by all the saints”, produces rich wines with a nose of red fruits and good complexity in the mouth. It can be served with “jambon persillé”, red meats or goat’s cheese. "A mentholated top note is present on the notably ripe aromas of roasted plum, cassis and warm earth scents. There is a lovely sense of underlying tension to the delicious and well-detailed flavors that possess a sleek mouthfeel though there is enough warmth to notice on the otherwise lingering finish." This small plot of 30 arces (0.7 acre), located at the foot of the slope, below Pommard Village, has a soil rich in loams, clay and sand. The word “port” in the appellation’s name, “La rue au Port”, meant “a passage”. Writing in 1955 the historian Augustin Collot said “La rue au Port seems to indicate the passage that wagons and carts had to follow so as to not pay the toll”. The plot produces wines that are characteristic of the Pommard appellation: dense, powerful reds that are an ideal accompaniment for dishes with a sauce, large game animals or birds, or cheeses such as Epoisses, Maroilles, Ami du Chambertin.

Jeb Dunnuck 95-97 points. Wine Advocate 94 points. Because of its rich tannic structure, I expect the 2017 Châteauneuf du Pape A la Gloire de Mon Grand-Père to be among the longer-lived wines from this estate. It's loaded with concentrated notes of plums, raspberries and cherries, all delivered on a full-bodied, velvety palate and ending with chewy tannins and salted licorice. JC Aug 2019.

WA 97 The 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape la Folie is a special cuvée that has only been made three times: in 2007, 2015 and 2016. As Nicolas Boiron points out, it's a "modern style" of Châteauneuf, completely destemmed and aged in demi-muids and barriques, with a fair proportion of those barrels being new. Mocha cedar notes mark the nose at this early age, while the flavors resemble caramelized cherries and baking spices. Full-bodied, rich, creamy and undeniably plush, it's still recognizable as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, showing velvety hints of chocolate on the long finish. The vines are all 80 to 90 years old, selected from parcels in Brusquières, Gardiole, Mont-Redon and Pignan. Glorious raspberry and cherry fruit picks up hints of mint and some stemmy notes, but they're remarkably well-integrated and should be completely absorbed within a couple of years. Full-bodied, rich and creamy in texture, this tour de force remains lively, silky and long on the finish. With 1,000 cases produced, it should be reasonably priced and...

Wine Advocate 97-99 points. I was blown away by the prodigious fruit in the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes. Quantities are only maybe half of the 2016, so you can imagine how concentrated and rich this baby is. Waves of raspberry and cherry fruit are seductive on the nose, then crash over the palate with a tsunami of concentration and power. If time in the cellar can coax some additional elegance out of the wine, it could be a candidate for perfection. JC Sept 2018.

Awesome cranberry fruit on the palate. Light chewiness to the tannin – this won’t need years before it can be enjoyed, but it has the purity of flavour to last a long while. Echezeaux is characterized by its tenderness and breadth. It is often open and expressive early. It reveals a great flexibility, with a constant velvety mouth feel. Raspberry flavors along with those of wild rose characterize it in its youth. It matures...

The shallow ground of brown-limestone, consists of gravel, clayey silts, on hard limestone. The forty year old vines are of sufficient age to produce balanced and concentrated grapes. In the glass... The name derives from small wild plum trees found in certain waste lands and whose tannins cling to the gums. This Nuits is thus a sensual and sharp wine, with a rather masculine personality, perhaps not pleasing to the untrained amateurs. Its power confers an excellent potential of aging. With age, it will develop dry prune flavors. At...

Winery Notes: The reds are quite dark in colour, their shades varying from deep rubythrough crimson to garnet. While young, the wine’s aroma suggests a spring garden with small red fruits (raspberry, strawberry) and black fruits (blackcurrant, blackberry). These intensify with age and evolve into peony and jasmine, preserved and brandied fruits, pistachio, prune, leather, truffle, mushroom and cinnamon. The deep soil begets a vigorous, full-bodied Pinot Noir, robust yet refined. Tender and fruity, this wine reaches its peak after 3 to 5 years in the cellar, revealing a firm and well-built body, richly chewy and with pleasing tannins.
