The Lynn family have been residents of the Penola - Coonawarra district for over four generations, starting out as Store-Keepers and then graduating into grazing. The property on which Majella now stands was originally owned by Frank Lynn and bought by his nephew, George, in 1960 for Merino wool production. Majella now has 61ha under vine and makes some of the finest wines in Coonawarra. Universally regarded as one of Coonawarra's greatest wines, it continues to win trophies and medals throughout Australia and the world. The wine is dark magenta in colour, with a deep ruby red hue. Mint, eucalypt, dark fruit with savoury, toasty aromas are paired with a fresh, structured palate of mint and cassis supported by classic mulberry and plum characters. Fine tannins and good length. Drink now or wait 12 - 15 years. A defining feature of this wine is how complete it appears, even in youth. It bodes well for long-term enjoyment, too. A synergy of flavour and textures from blackcurrants, mint, toasty and cedary wood, and more besides. Finely chiselled tannins and cleansing acidity slink across the full-bodied palate. Drink to: 2036; Date Tasted: Jan 2021; Alcohol: 14.5%; Rating: 95 Points & Special Value Star; Jane Faulkner; James Halliday Wine Companion
