Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2018 – 96 Points Bob Campbell MS | Bobcampbell.nz, therealreview.com Elegant, aromatic pinot noir with bright, high energy floral, violet, cherry, fresh herb, star anise and restrained spicy oak supported by fine tannins and juicy acidity. An attractively fragrant, supple wine that’s a little lighter than usual but gives a nod in the direction of Burgundy and shows promising ageing potential. October 2020.
96 Points - Outstanding "A single vineyard expression presenting a complex, pure, intriguing and perfumed bouquet. Light red berry fruits, red apple skin and scents of place with aromas of fine silty clay and sand minerals then complexity from judicious use of oak with light brown kitchen spices followed by aromas of mild toasty barrel and savoury dried herb layer. Equally complex on the palate, tense and youthful with firm textures and velvet mouthfeel from tannins and acidity. Savoury with a core of fruit and flavours that reflect the bouquet. A fine wine with power and finesse, complexity and length. Best drinking from 2022 through 2030."...
The Farrside vineyard sits on a northeast-facing slope and consists of limestone topped with black volcanic soil. The vines were planted in 2001 and run east-west to protect the fruit from overexposure to the sun. The clones are a mixture of 114, 115, 777, 667 and MV6. Even though the Farrside and Sangreal vineyards are only 300 metres apart, the darker soils and cooler growing conditions of the Farrside vineyard mean these grapes are picked 10 to 12 days after all others and produce a more masculine and edgy wine. The fruit is hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented in an open-top fermenter. Between 40 to 50 per cent of the...
Wine Front 93 points. The vineyard (planted on original rootstock in 2001) is located in the heart of the Western District Farming country, approximately 150 kilometers south-west of Melbourne. The soils across the slope of the site are a mixture of grey sandy clay loams at the south end to dark brown loams with fragments of buckshot and quartz gravels towards the north. All with underlying brown to yellow clays. Overall the soils remain very moist throughout the year because of the clay based soil profile and annual rainfall of 885mm, resulting in the very attractive damp earthiness character in the fruit and wine. Nick Farr has been taking...
Colour: ruby red with garnet hues. Aroma: Its seductive bouquet is reminiscent of small red fruits such as raspberries, but also plums, cherries and other juicy fruit rich in pulp. Taste: Velvety and soft flavor. Slightly floral nuances are accompanied by a fine tannic structure and a pleasant freshness on the palate.
Doctors Flat Pinot is about Steve Davies’ pursuit of wine true to its origin—wine of terroir. The vines are organically farmed with care and harvested by hand. The fruit is then fermented in small open tanks with minimal intervention. The wines spend 12 months in French barrels (about 1/3 new) and then a winter resting in tank, before being bottled in the following spring without fining or filtration. Only the best of the small lots are blended to make the single vineyard Doctors Flat Pinot Noir. What The Critics Say 96/100 Bob Campbell MW "Deep, velvety pinot noir with cassis, red-fleshed plum, and layers of spice and nutty oak. Still...
(BC 96) Bob Campbell 96: "..Made from grapes grown in the upper slopes (420m) of the Bendigo sub-region. Rich, dense pinot noir with dark-fleshed plum, dark cherries, wood smoke, old leather and liquorice flavours...."
ACCOLADES 95 Points - Cameron Douglas MS 95 Points - Sam Kim Wineorbit.com 5 Stars - Raymond Chan Wine Reviews 93 Points Bob Campbell MW. WINERY NOTE: A Pinot Noir with generous richness & flavor concentration. Layers of ripe fruit, floral and spice with a gentle tannin line. Unfined and bottled on site. The first week of November and the month of December were very hot and dry - perfect conditions for flowering. The vines produced a solid crop with large bunches. Careful leaf plucking to open the canopy and significant bunch thinning was required to ensure quality targets were met. Rain in January and February gave the soils a top up and...
Tim Atkin MW 93 points. This wine has a lovely luminosity – the colour is bright crimson. The nose has delicate earthy aromas combined with red and dark berry flavours which follow through to the palate where they combine with interesting savoury notes and just a touch of oak on the finish. #SAFA
Wine Advocate 90 points. The 2017 La Pineta shows a dark and almost spicy side of this fragile Burgundian grape. The combined heat and dry conditions of this vintage have together shaped a concentrated and rich Pinot Nero. I thought the 2016 vintage was too ripe, but ironically that was a cooler vintage than 2017 was. This hot vintage expression, on the other hand, shows careful harmony and deft management when it comes to that dark fruit concentration. Dark cherry and cassis are followed by nicely integrated acidity. Cue it up with a Peking duck. Only 6,000 bottles were made. ML Sept 2019. La Pineta (100% Pinot Nero) is created with the...

Jeni Port for James Halliday 95 points. "MV6 clone, whole berry ferment, 7-day ferment on skins, 10 months in French oak (35% new). The bar has been lifted. Tightly focused, a raft of intoxicating scents of pomegranate, black olive, cherry compote, plum, vanilla pod. Deliciously irresistible. Underpinning succulent fruit is a warm savouriness filling the mid-palate accompanied by supple tannins that last right to the finish" WINERY NOTE: Our flagship Pinot Noir, taken from cooler Yarra Valley sites for freshness and bright fruit.
