A gentle and supple Dixon offering charm as it opens up to red roses and rosehips, a whisper of spiced cherries and blood orange. Plenty of sweet fruit, bitter herbs and chinotto mingling on the just-mid-weighted palate, with bright acidity and furry, if fine, tannins in tow. It doesn’t have power, but it has detail. It’ll also garner more complexity in time. 95 points. Jane Faulkner Published 16 August 2022 WINERY NOTE: The 2020 Dixon spent 10 months in barrel and was bottled in mid February. This wine is a composition of sections of the original 1988 planting and the 2001 Kaye vineyard. It has a lifted nose of roses, red cherries,...
Vineyard: The Farrside vineyard sits on a northeast-facing slope and consists of limestone topped with black volcanic soil. The vines were planted in 2001 and run east-west to protect the fruit from overexposure to the sun. The clones are a mixture of 114, 115, 777, 667 and MV6. Even though the Farrside and Sangreal vineyards are only 300 metres apart, the darker soils and cooler growing conditions of the Farrside vineyard mean these grapes are picked 10 to 12 days after all others and produce a more masculine and edgy wine. Vinification: The fruit is hand-picked and sorted in the vineyard, then fermented in an open-top fermenter. Between 40...
Wine Advocate 93 points. This wine is new to my annual tasting repertoire and represents an exciting new discovery from Cantina Tramin. The 2018 Alto Adige Pinot Noir Riserva Maglen opens to a mid-weight approach and a nice sense of concentration that remains impactful but elegant at the same time. The wine is redolent of cherry, cassis, pressed violets and blood orange. There are some distant notes of earth and smoke with crushed rock as well. This release of 12,000 bottles is a terrific performance from a first-rate winery.ML Sept 2021. Decanter 92 points. James Suckling 92 points. "Pronounced licorice, black-pepper and smoky aromas, as...
Gold Medal, Selection Mondiale, Canada, 2020. Silver Medal, Mundus Vini 2022. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, and harvested in October. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks for ten days and later aged in French oak barrels for 9 months. One of the few Pinot Noir 's grown in Spain from “El Cerezo” vineyard that is 30 years old. Tasting Notes Deep black cherry in color with aromas of plum and black currants, the Castillo de Monjardin Pinot Noir has delicate flavors of matured black fruits. Silky, with a long, refined finish. On the palate is very elegant, well balanced with flavors of red berries. Aged for 9 months in oak barriques...
Tim Atkin MW 93 points. Broader and more textured than its Sandstone partner, this is a little more compact and brooding in its youth, but will reward cellaring. Spicy, savoury and well balanced, it unfurls flavours of black cherry, earth and redcurrant in the glass, supported by fine-grained tannins. 2021-27. TASTING NOTES: Layered and textured truffle savouriness and earthy forest floor interwoven with concentrated black cherry compote, harmoniously supported by mineral textured tannins. PHILOSOPHY: The focus is on purity, vibrancy, restraint, and harmonious balance by the careful selection and blending of specific clones grown on clay...
Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, 96 points. A stunning expression of the variety with dark cherry, toasted spice, thyme, cured meat and dark mushroom aromas, it's concentrated and richly textured in the mouth offering terrific fruit power combined with seductive savoury nuances. Impressively weighted and flowing, backed by fine grainy tannins, finishing persistent and structured. At its best: now to 2032. Dec 2021. SK. Michael Cooper 5 stars. Still unfolding, the classy 2018 vintage (5*) is a single-vineyard red, estate-grown at Bannockburn, matured for a year in French oak barrels (24 per cent new), and bottled without fining or filtering. Deeply...
Justin's tasting note: "An elegant wine with a character all of its own! Bright, vivid, red colour. Intense and fruity nose where notes of wet undergrowth and wild nature can be detected. Fleshy and well structured on the palate. A little chunky in its youth, it becomes rounder and delicious to drink as it gets older. Very flavourful aftertaste." This red wine is produced on the Aubuzes climat in Maranges on the edge of the Santenay vineyard. The name of the place is a local variant of "Aubues" from the Gallic word "albucre" which means a whitish clay soil. Here the soil is rich and clayey, covered with pebbles, gravels and calcareous sands;...
Tasting Notes Intense, vivid translucent youthful purple-ruby appearance. The wine shows pronounced lifted perfume on the nose with red berry fruit, musk, wild mushrooms and hints of savoury richness and spice and a clean vibrant minerality. On the palate there are very pure Pinot fruit flavours on entry with red cherry and musk flavours coupled with fresh acidity. The wine has layered complexity with great elegance and finesse. Very fine lacy, almost powdery tannin on the finish. In The Vineyard Selected from 3 clones of Pinot Noir with an average age of 21 years old, situated on loamy gravel topsoil with clay sub-soil.The vineyards are...
Huon Hooke 95 points/ 5 Stars. Organically Certified BioGro 5438 | Moutere Clay Gravels | Dry Farmed | Low Cropping | Single Vineyard | Hand Harvested | Wild Ferment | Natural Spring Malo | Barrel Matured (20% New) | Unfined | Unfiltered | Vegan A classic. Rich, supple and, really dark chocolate. It’s true to site and season with a juicy, spicy core. A structured wine with not an ounce of unnecessary oak or fat fruit. The wine is aristocratically framed but still sneaks in a touch of seduction. Complete, intelligent, and speaks with clarity. We believe the 2017 sits alongside the finest Pinots we have produced. Good for the planet, good...
James Suckling 92 points. Cranberries, strawberries, fresh herbs and citrus. Quite mouth-filling and succulent on the palate, where finely chiselled tannins cut out a sleek form.
