Cellar Door 50aud.

It was 1990 when Jeff Burch crossed paths with Pascal Marchand in the cellars of Domaine Comte Armand in Pommard. A fast friendship quickly formed, with passion for Pinot Noir as its foundation. A decade later they embraced the possibilities of a unique collaboration, and began the Marchand & Burch Collection. Since 2007 Marchand & Burch has grown to represent a sophisticated expression of terroir through fine wines produced in Western Australia’s Great Southern region and the Côte d’Or in Burgundy, France. Three decades on, the friendship endures while the wines tell an exciting, evolving story.

This comes from the best batches the team could source from their vineyards at Mt Barker and Frankland River. It is a cracker, one of the very best wines from the M&B team I have seen. Dark magenta, this has a gorgeous nose. An ideal wine to show just how good Great Southern Shiraz can be. Plums, cassis, spices, coffee beans, cherries and mocha notes. Rich yet restrained, and finely balanced, it is then supple, seductive and seamless. Love it and the ever-so-fine tannins with a slight graphite character that draw out excellent length. This is stunning, and amazing value. Date: Mar 2023; Drink: 2023-2033; Rating: 96 Points; Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.

This was a cooler vintage resulting in well-structured generally medium weight wines of excellent poise and definition. In this case there is plenty of power, but delivered with a degree of finesse and understatement. Chalky and slightly rustic characters emerge suggesting a sense of the vineyard emerging. Perfectly balanced with the fine-grained oak expertly applied. Date: Apr 2023; Drink: 2023 - 2033; Rating: 95 Points; Ray Jordan.
